The MSE faculty is committed to providing a quality educational experience for our students,
integrating high quality research with this education, and serving the Profession, State, and Nation.
Specific Educational Objectives for BS Graduates in MSE
The general objective of The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at
The University of Arizona is to produce quality graduates who will practice in the field and will enjoy
successful careers. Specific educational objectives were established by the faculty to
achieve the overall objective. They are:
- To produce graduates who have the ability to apply the fundamentals of mathematics, the
physical sciences, and engineering principles.
- To produce graduates who are knowledgeable about materials science and engineering,
who understand the interrelationship among processing, microstructure, properties, and performance,
and can apply that knowledge in solving design problems associated with any class of engineering
materials.
- To produce graduates who individually, or in multidisciplinary teams, can define problems,
including design problems, and develop and evaluate economically feasible alternative
solutions from diverse knowledge bases, and can implement an acceptable solution in a local,
national or global context.
- To produce graduates who can communicate effectively in written reports, verbal presentations,
spontaneous communications, and in graphical or pictorial presentations.
- To produce graduates who are familiar with the modern engineering tools used in the
profession.
- To produce graduates who have a broad exposure to the humanities and the social sciences,
who understand their responsibilities to their profession and society, and who also understand
the value of life-long learning.
