Catalog Data: Social Constraints on Engineering (3) I Influence of consumers, organizations, state and national governments and international treaties on engineering in the USA, Japan and selected other nations. (Identical with ENGR 251, ANTH 251).

Text Books: Dertouzos, Michael L., Richard K. Lester and Robert M. Solow Made in America: regaining the productive edge (New York: Harper, 1989).

Instructor: David Killick, Professor of the Department of Anthropology

Requirements: Attendance at lectures, participation in class discussions, Mid-term and final exams, two short (10 page) papers. Attendance at lecltures is required. You should note in particular that the material given in lectures is not necessarily repeated in the readings. The exam questions will be drawn from both the lecture material and the readings.

Grading : Each essay and each exam will count for 25% of the final grade. I do not grade on a curve-what you see is what you get. Letter grades are assigned as follows:

A: 85%-100%;
B: 75-84%
C: 65-74%
D: 51-64%
E: 50% or less
