Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
a picture of the DMA & TGA equipment
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is an excellent tool to study hydrates. Not only can water of hydration be quantified, but dehydration kinetics can be ascertained. An example is presented for a hemi-hydrate of a crystalline organic compound. Both scanning and isothermal TGA thermograms reveal that water leaves the crystal lattice sequentially over the range just above room temperature to about 120C.
